Designing Sound Futures is a York University funded research project focusing on sound, technology, inclusive design, and transdisciplinary learning.

Disting Expert Sleepers

The Disting basically does everything. Just pick the function you need to help you compose, design sound, or perform.

The Disting is your modular ‘Swiss-army knife’. It can be a VCO, a VCF, an LFO, an effects module, a tuner, a ‘distortion pedal’, and much more. Need an extra module on fly? You probably have it in the Disting. Just use the dials to select an algorithm and see the graphic guide to learn how each function (algorithm) works.

The Disting MK-4 offers 84 distinct functions, though we will only highlight some of the basic functions covered in our workshops, or point out some really key functions that can be used to further refine your sound design, or create new and interesting sounds, sound shapes, and so on.

Key module functions include:

  • Quantizer with scales (for selecting chromatic, major/minor scales and modes).
  • Dual Waveshaper wavefolder for making complex sounds!
  • Sample and Hold with noise source.
  • Clockable Delay/Echo
  • LFO with through zero frequency control and waveshaping
  • Clockable LFO with multiply/divide and waveshaping
  • VCO with sine and saw outputs
  • VCO with waveshaping saw/triangle and pulse outputs (for complex waves).
  • Delay Effects; Vibrato/chorus/flange effects
  • Resonator for drum synthesis
  • Vocoder 12 band
  • Phaser up to 10 stages
  • Tape Delay with voltage controlled tape speed
  • Multiple Filters (VCFs)
  • Envelope Sound Shapers
  • Envelope & VCA
  • Tuner
  • MIDI Clock – MIDI/CV – CV/MIDI
  • Stereo Chorus

  • A and B (bottom jacks) are usually outputs while X, Y and Z are inputs (for control signals coming from other modules like sequencers, LFOs, or clock triggers).
Designing Sound Futures was made possible by a York University Catalyzing Interdisciplinary Research Clusters (CIRC) Grant and the support of our many academic, community and industry partners.
