Designing Sound Futures is a York University funded research project focusing on sound, technology, inclusive design, and transdisciplinary learning.

Conversations: Morton Subotnick at the Re/Lab

This York DSF-supported event (in partnership with and hosted by the Re/Lab) brought world-renowned modular synthesis pioneer and inventor, Morton Subotnick, to the Toronto’s Re/Lab to discuss modular synth histories, and the cultural practices/implications of converging technologies in the 1960s and beyond,

The event was attended by members of the DSF team, the Toronto synth and electronic music community, members of Frequency Freaks, Toronto-based composers and sound designers, and DSF partners like CMST Toronto and System80 (Jeff Lee), as well as emerging synth designers in the GTA (RAs Dakota Melin and Eric Neil Johnson).

This community building event took place on October 26th, 2023, in conjunction with a Morton Subotnick performance the following evening – with an opening performance by York PhD Student, Heidi Chan (Designing Sound Futures Research Assistant).
